The Forks School of Historic Preservation

Be Part of the Solution

Our built environment is a huge part of both our national and local culture, yet our old buildings are increasingly at risk. Every year, historic homes, schools, and commercial structures face decay, inappropriate repairs, or even demolition. The Forks School of Historic Preservation was named for the place where Albion, Michigan began: “The Forks,” the confluence of the north and south branches of the Kalamazoo River. This historic meeting point became the center of early settlement, industry, and community life—a fitting namesake for a school dedicated to sustaining the heritage rooted in this landscape.

Our workshops teach practical, hands-on skills that help preserve the buildings shaped by that history. Students learn to use materials and techniques compatible with historic construction, ensuring repairs support—rather than harm—the structure.

Courses take place across two locations to provide both context and immersive experience. The classroom portion is in a restored 1880s carriage house, while the hands-on portion takes place at one of Albion's stately Victorian houses that is currently under restoration.
